Preface to 2. BMW Group Packaging Manual

This manual will inform the BMW Group's suppliers of packaging requirements. At the same time, this packaging manual is also part of the purchase conditions.

The following provisions will ensure a reasonable and smooth material flow

The most appropriate container and packaging design

Standardized dimensions and

The quantity of the goods in conformity with the packing.

Structure of the packaging manual

This Packaging Manual (VPH) consists of 2 topics:

The first topic, "BMW Standard Packaging Manual" includes basic packaging plan data for the entire BMW Group. It includes temporary information on suppliers organized by year and month in each planning stage and daily affairs. The supplier begins work by choosing to schedule delivery of the first shipment or to continue with subsequent daily supplies. Overall, the BMW Standard Packing Manual applies to the entire BMW Group.

The differences between the various national and specialized BMW plants are the second theme, the "standard deviation". If there is a discrepancy with the provisions of the BMW Standard Packing Manual, the "standard deviation" will apply..

Basic conditions

The packaging requirements specified in the packaging data sheet are legally binding when the supplier's consent is signed and approved by the BMW Group. Once a packaging agreement is reached with the internal/external supplier, this packaging agreement will become part of the purchase terms.

In the event of a discrepancy with the format specified in the packaging, the BMW Group reserves the right to challenge the costs incurred by the supplier in respect of transport, disposal or repackaging. Any deviation from the specified packaging will affect the evaluation of the supplier's logistics performance.

Where reasonable, any deviation from these technical requirements (e. g. the use of alternative packaging in continuous production, except for trial production conditions) should be agreed by the relevant BMW Group department in a timely manner. The corresponding "alternative packaging!" must be indicated on the delivery note!" and the contact person (name, department code and telephone number) of the BMW Group who agreed to use the package. If the BMW Group does not specify this packaging, the type of packaging recommended by the supplier shall be agreed by the relevant authorities. As long as the packaging used is approved or changed for the first time, the packaging data sheet should be completed and sent to the purchasing department (a copy should be sent to the packaging planning department).

Agreeing to a certain type of packaging does not relieve the supplier of the responsibility to send non-destructive parts.

Only with the approval of BMW's Packaging Planning Department can containers belonging to the BMW Group be discarded. If this is not done, the supplier shall bear the replacement cost.

BMW Group Standard

BMW Group standard containers are defined as follows:

In addition to external use, it can also be used in all factories and departments

Load specific part series not specified

No fixed accessories

BM W Packaging Department coordinates with the supplier to determine the use of BMW standard containers.

BMW Group standard containers are only used for transportation between suppliers and the BMW Group.

The container should not be used for other purposes, such:

Turnaround of goods at the supplier's plant as part of the internal production process

Used as storage for intermediate stages of semi-finished products.

Storage of remaining goods now canceled by the supplier

For supply to upstream suppliers

The color of the standard container is RAL 4008 (lavender).

The supplier's share of the repair costs is 50 per cent.

The required quantity of containers is calculated by each supplier on the basis of the distribution order and monitored by BMW's empty container control department. The quantity of containers required for the first shipment must be requested in a timely manner. In the event of insufficient or excessive delivery or incorrect delivery, the supplier is responsible for notifying the responsible empty container control department.

For more information on the required data and the procedure for empty container control, see the relevant section.

Permitted and disallowed packaging materials

Fundamentally, packaging materials are widely recyclable in every part of the country and must be uniquely identifiable. Packaging markings must in no way indicate that recycling or heat use is prohibited.

Deviations from the standard apply to sales parts and accessories and international manufacturing, which shall be determined by a dedicated office of the BMW Group. In addition, some countries apply separate requirements. For example, in China, in addition to heat treatment and fumigation, the health certificate of the corresponding factory is required. Where wood-free packaging is used, the corresponding statement shall be included. In addition, should comply with the import and export regulations of various countries!

General requirements to avoid packaging waste

Generally, both economic and ecological aspects should be considered when planning packaging.

Environmental regulations on waste focus on the following principles, which reflect the priority given to ecologicality:

a) Avoidance is to limit the materials used to the absolute minimum.

B) Reduce the reuse of recyclable packaging: In combination with the above principles, recyclable packaging is preferred. The use of non-recyclable packaging should be reduced.

c) Recyclability of materials Recyclable materials accepted by environmental protection may be either recyclable or non-recyclable packaging.

In order to meet the requirements of environmental protection (packaging directive) and avoid unnecessary environmental pollution, only materials that meet environmental standards are allowed to be used.

wood packing material

The "Guidelines for the Control of Wood for Packaging in International Trade" published by the Secretariat of the International Plant Protection Convention of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in publication No.15 of March 15, 2002 should be followed and adopted in trade, except for wood that has been heat-treated or fumigated.

The following provisions apply to the EU:

According to the Decrees 2001/218/EC and 2001/219/EC of the Commission of the European Communities, the following applies to packaging timber (other than Admiralty timber) made of untreated wholly or partly coniferous timber, from Canada, China, Japan, the United States of America and Portugal, which can be used for crates, boxes, crates, drums, crates, wooden pallets, box pallets and other loading appliances and pallet cards:

The wood must be heat treated in a chamber at a minimum temperature of 56 degrees Celsius for at least 30 minutes or manually dried in a drying oven, which shall be inspected, evaluated and officially approved.

or

Fumigation must be carried out in accordance with officially approved technical methods using approved chemical reagents.

The wood shall be provided with evidence of heat treatment by the relevant method, showing where and by which heat treatment was carried out. In place of the above treatment certificate, the packaging of wood from Portugal may be accompanied by an official certificate of execution of the heat treatment method. Packaging materials made of hardwood produced in China (except Hong Kong), in addition to the above treatment, must be accompanied by a factory health certificate in accordance with Directive 2001/29/EC, Articles 7 and 8.

The wood must be peeled and there must be no holes larger than 3 mm in diameter caused by insects.

or

Manual drying must be carried out at an appropriate temperature/time ratio until the moisture content is less than 20% of the dry matter.

Some examples of wood markings for packaging are given below:

Special circumstances:

All special cases must be agreed by the BMW Group Packaging Planning Department.

Goods without pallets

Deliveries in cartons or paper bags without pallets shall be avoided as they can only be handled manually.

Sample packaging

The packaging of the sample must be approved by the quality inspection department. The costs are generally borne by the supplier.

Non-recyclable packaging

Unless agreed by the relevant BMW Group authorities, non-recyclable packaging should be avoided as much as possible.

These packages shall be supplied by the Supplier and shall meet the following requirements::

Easy non-destructive handling in industrial trucks (DIN 15140)

Fixing means to match size and weight

At least 2 layers can be stacked

Easy access to parts

Disposal in accordance with environmental standards

Provide moisture protection

Identification with maximum load capacity or stacking factor

The modular container shall conform to the standard dimensions of its modular structure. If there is a deviation from this regulation, the agreement of the packaging planning department or the parts sales department shall be obtained separately.

Packaging materials approved by the BMW Group have a 6-digit code. The code consists of a description identifier and a numeric structure.

A code in the "Packing material coding" table must be specified. On the delivery note (e. g. 15 x SCH020), the external packaging (e. g. 5x PAL000) must be listed outside the inner packaging.
